Night Shift has deep roots in Baltimore's industrial east side. Our home at 1725 S. Ponca Street sits in a building that dates to 1940, in a part of the city long shaped by factories, warehouses, port activity, and the rhythm of shift work.

In its earliest documented years, the address was used for commercial operations, including a mid-century food distribution business, Taylor & Blackmon, Inc., reflecting the area’s working industrial character. By the 1950s, the property had transitioned into a neighborhood bar known as Sooky’s Bar, featuring a full kitchen, live music, and a purpose-built bar—marking the beginning of its life in hospitality.

In the early 1960s, the venue became Ponca Inn, a long-running tavern serving Baltimore’s east-side workforce. During the 1970s, Ponca Inn began evolving alongside the city’s nightlife, introducing go-go dancers and late-night entertainment and gradually shifting toward an adult-oriented venue.

By 1989, the property had fully transitioned into a nightclub known as Eclipse, representing a more modern, high-energy era of Baltimore nightlife.

In 1991, following a change in ownership, the venue entered a new chapter as Night Shift, launching as a showbar and restaurant and establishing the identity that many Baltimoreans still recognize today.

And in 1998 we entered the modern era of the information super highway!

Over the years, Night Shift became a familiar part of Baltimore's after-hours scene. Its location and identity made it a longstanding destination on the east side, with generations of guests passing through its doors.

Under new ownership in 2025, the club began a new chapter. While Night Shift continues the legacy of this historic address, the current era is focused on something different: revitalizing the building, improving the food and drink program, raising hospitality standards, broadening the entertainment experience, and reintroducing the club to Baltimore as a stronger, more polished destination. With expanded hours and a renewed vision, Night Shift is building on its history while leaving the weaker parts of the recent past behind.
